Medicine, in its capacity as an applied science committed to serving the sick, is necessarily based on concepts of the natural sciences as well as elements of the humanities. Our Institute consolidates the disciplines of medical ethics and medical history into one major independent institution. In this way, our teaching program, research, and clinical ethics counseling address medicine via the humanities.

The head offices of both the University of Freiburg's Interdisciplinary Center for Ethics and the federally funded junior research group Human Nature in Biomedical Ethics are also located here. In addition, our Institute accommodates the Forum for Ethics and Law in Medicine.

Both medical ethics and medical history are an important element of the pre-clinical and clinical medical studies programs of all medical disciplines (medicine, dentistry, molecular medicine) at Freiburg University. In recent years, we have also collaborated closely with the Philosophy Department, the History Department and the Center for Anthropology and Gender Studies. Both medical history and medical ethics play an important role in the Philosophy Departments developing bachelors and masters degree programs.
