Caring about Care. The Concept of Care in Healthcare. A Comparison of Germany and the Netherlands

Summer School September 7 -11, 2015

Department of Medical Ethics and the History of Medicine, University of Freiburg, Germany

Early career researchers within medical ethics, nursing ethics, medicine, philosophy, theology, political and social science from Germany and the Netherlands participate in a summer school on „Caring about Care. The Concept of Care in Health Care. A Comparison of Germany and the Netherlands“ in Freiburg, Germany.

This summer school is dealing with the normative role of the concept of care in health care. There is growing concern among health care professionals that it becomes increasingly difficult within the settings of one’s daily work to live up to the demands of this concept. The aim of the summer school is, firstly, to analyze in detail the relevant normative content of the concept of care. Secondly, the summer school aims to identify those developments and conditions in the health care sector that may, on the one hand, enable and, on the other hand, hinder orientation towards “care” within the daily routines of health care. As part of this schedule, theoretical debates on “care” in Germany and the Netherlands and the practice of care in health care in these two countries are to be compared.

Issues to be discussed include:

  • the concept of care in philosophical and theological traditions
  • the ethics of care and its status among alternative ethical theories
  • care and justice
  • the role of embodiment in care practice
  • care compared to neighboring concepts such as responsibility, empathy, and vulnerability in health care
  • forms of care (e.g. dyadic vs. non-dyadic care, altruistic care vs. self-care)
  • potential obstacles to care in health care practice (e.g. Diagnosis Related Groups (DRGs)/Diagnose-Behandeling-Combinaties“ (DBCs); care and technical devices)
  • factors alleviating care in health care practice

Keynote speakers:

  • Elisabeth Conradi, Duale Hochschule Baden-Württemberg Stuttgart (D)
  • Helen Kohlen, Philosophisch-Theologische Hochschule Vallendar (D)
  • Hanneke van der Meide, Tilburg University (NL)
  • Frans Vosman, Universiteit voor Humanistiek Utrecht (NL)

The summer school takes place at the Caritas convention center in Freiburg, situated at a scenic hillside close to the city center of Freiburg
